International Women’s Day

On International Women's Day, we're celebrating the achievements of women and are reminded to work towards a more gender-balanced world.

We're using this day to chat with Duckfeet (Wiema Sko) owner, Vibeke Dissing, to learn more about her experience running the brand and what IWD means to her.

A Quick History

In 2004, Vibeke Dissing was approached by Claus and Inga, the original creators of Duckfeet, to take over Wiema Sko. Claus and Inga wanted to entrust the future of their company to someone who understood and believed in the characteristics and sustainable ethos of the brand — with her already extensive experience in footwear, they thought this someone should be Vibeke.

Under her care, Wiema Sko remains committed to maintaining the highest ethical, environmental and production standards for the Duckfeet brand.

Q&A with Vibeke Dissing

What is it like owning and operating Duckfeet (Wiema Sko)?

I feel it's a privilege that I was given the chance to take over Duckfeet, and my job is to take good care of the brand.

Who/what is your biggest influence?

My grandmother! She was a great woman. Her and my grandfather owned [an] eyeglasses and watch business and every one was thinking that my grandfather was the boss, but she was the heart and the brain behind it. I loved helping and learning from her during my summer vacation.

What advice did you receive early in your career that has stayed with you?

Do that what feels right for you and believe in it.

International Women’s Day was first marked in 1911 – over 100 years ago. Why do you think the day is still relevant?

Yes, I do think that it's important because still today women do not have the same possibilities like men.

What does International Women's Day / gender equality mean to you & why is gender equality important in the workplace?

Gender equality is not a question for me, it's [an] of course! It's important because it keeps a good balance in the company.

What do you hope for Duckfeet in the future?

I compare Duckfeet like raising my daughter Mie. I try to give good inputs, giving a direction, take care, but in the end it's only on loan, and I hope that the day when I pass on Duckfeet it still stands for a high quality timeless designed shoe, produced in respect for the environment and for all the people standing behind the brand.
