Warm-Up with a Danish Varm Chokolade!

Warm drinks are at the top of every hygge list.

The Danish concept of
hygge, loosely defined as the value of coziness and connection, is our secret to not just surviving winter — but actually thriving all season.

How do we cozy up and do that aside from our favorite wool-lined boots? This hot chocolate recipe from skandibaking.com!

Your perception of snow can float from unbearable to beautiful once you’ve got a warm mug in-hand. Another secret? Use dark chocolate and make yourself from fresh whipped cream!

Details below, and be sure to tag us in your snuggled up shots @duckfeetusa !

  • 2.5* cups (600 ml) milk (*we use large mugs for this, so you can cut this down to two cups for smaller mugs!)
  • 1.5 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla paste or vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (80 grams) chopped chocolate/chocolate chips (we prefer using dark chocolate for this, but use whatever you prefer!)
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder (optional – we find you get plenty of chocolate flavor with the chopped chocolate, but you can add this for a richer flavor!)
  • Pinch of salt (a secret game-changer!)

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy whipping cream
  • Chocolate shavings (optional, but so so good!)

1. If adding whipped cream to the top, whip the heavy cream to your preferred stiffness (Note: we don't add sugar to our whipped cream, but feel free to do so!).

2. Combine milk, sugar, salt, vanilla, and cocoa powder in a small pot on the stove. Whisk to combine.

3. Heat on low heat until you start to see steam coming off the top. You don't want this to boil, as you want to make sure the milk doesn't form a skin on the top!

4. Once the mixture has come up to a warmer temperature, add in the chopped chocolate or chocolate chips and whisk until everything is fully combined.

5. Divide evenly between two mugs and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Enjoy!
